Why I Won’t Judge You

It can be intimidating to come to someone like me for support with money. After all, you may think that I’ve got it all together since I’m a money coach and that I’m just going to tell you all the things you’re doing wrong and how to fix it. (I won’t, I promise!) You may imagine that it would be so uncomfortable to open up about your spending, your debt, your lack of savings, etc.

And of course you’d feel that way! Money is a personal and tender topic and it goes against our nature to share about any area of life where we don’t feel up to par, especially with someone who seems to do well with this area.

But what would happen if you took the risk and opened up? On the one hand, you could be shamed and end up feeling worse. On the other hand, you could be heard and understood and then empowered to make choices you feel proud of.

There are a few reasons why I don’t judge.

  1. I’m in no position to judge. Just because I feel confident about money management now doesn’t mean I always have felt that way.

  2. Judging simply isn’t helpful. It never produces positive change that actually sticks.

  3. It’s just yucky ☹️

I always want to create a safe space where my clients feel acknowledged and validated. Only then can we really make progress on getting you where you want to be. I am here to support you in meeting your goals!

Actions come from feelings, and feelings come from thoughts. So if your thought is a judgemental one like, “I”m no good with money. I just can’t get this right,” how would you feel? And then what actions would you take?

If your core thought changes to, “I am learning to make financial choices to support what I value in life,” how would you feel? What kind of choices would you make?

While it may make sense to think that being hard on yourself will motivate you to “do better,” judging yourself just doesn’t set you up for success. Ask yourself what it would look like if you stopped judging yourself and instead showed yourself understanding and compassion. What is on the other side of judgement for you? What new thought or belief would empower you to make choices that align with your goals and values? I’m here to support you!
